Who am I?

It’s hard to explain a person in words on a page. There are the bullet points of life, which sometimes say too little. Then there are those level five friendship - whisper in the dead of night- deepest desires and darkest fears type things, which are probably too much information. So, as we’re here to read and write, and given that writing is often akin to spilling a soul onto the page, I think I’ll explain what kind of writer I am instead; that might give some insight.

I have a lot of ideas, they swirl around my head, most of them stay there swimming around, unwritten, spooling out into a hundred directions. I think about them before I go to sleep. I think about them when I wake up. I think about them on the toilet.

And then I procrastinate. When I’m supposed to write a novel, I write short original fiction. Try to write short original fiction, I end up writing fanfic. When I try to write fanfic, I end up watching audio commentaries for the purpose of ‘research’.

I would like to try writing in different places but I only write at my desk. I would like to try writing while drunk, just to see what I come out with, but I never have. I would like to try writing with a background of heavy metal music but it’s one more thing I’ve never gotten around to. I would like to try writing in different spaces physical and mental, just to see what comes out. To just be angry or sad or excited and write. But I hardly ever write anything on impulse that hasn’t floated for a while.

I like to try different styles and forms and ways of writing and did so more than ever in last years Idol. I would like to do more.

I would like to tear my pieces apart, re-work them, re-write them into something better. But I am afraid.

I would also like to write in a team. We all need to be taken outside of ourselves sometimes, for our creations to be more than just ourselves, for them to be bigger, to grow, that is the wonder that comes of collaboration, bouncing ideas, realising a creation that otherwise could never have been.

I like to explore and I like to play but I’m a creature of habit, staying in one place, spinning through the world on a road that only exists in my mind.

I like to explore and play but I rarely actually do; I need stimulation, inspiration, prompts; to push me to try things I want to do but wouldn’t. And that’s why I’m here.

I am a writer. This is the most magnificent of writerly playgrounds. I look forward to playing with you all.

There are a lot of creative spaces that I am scared (or lazy) to explore myself. I need to do more of that.

Good Luck this season!

IKR. Idol does tend to be a brilliant push though.

Thank you, good luck to you too :)

Oh, dear. I so feel you on this. People tell me writer's block is a lack of ideas and I laugh. I am bursting with ideas. They torment me because when I face that blank screen, I can't get them on the page.

Good luck, and I hope you find what you're looking for here.

Yeah exactly, millions of ideas, none that coalesce into words on a page.

Thank you, hope you do too :).

Yup, procrastination... so many ideas, so little time, so I go and do other things - I'm with you on that :) I hope you get to try out some of your ideas this time around in Idol! You might be surprised what you came out with while drunk, for instance.

Thank you, hope you get to try out your ideas too :). Yeah, if only there was a was to just automatically pull the ideas from our heads.

Greetings! As I've been reading introductions, they've been making me think of songs. Both the swirl in your name and the swirling you reference in this introduction made me think of my favorite faux-psychedelic band, The Dukes of the Stratosphere, particularly this song (more in terms of music than lyrics):

Enjoy playing LJI!

Thank you, ooh awesome, this thing you're doing with song replies is so cool, and you're so good at picking songs.

Thanks, hope you enjoy Idol too!

I often like to let ideas percolate. Sometimes, when I really can't decide, I just sit down and start doing some free writing. Sometimes, that goes somewhere, and sometimes I just scrap it. But anything that gets the ideas flowing gets me closer.

Oh yeah, anything that gets ideas flowing. But I'm definitely a big percolater.

Now that I have some "time off" from writing, I can get around to catching up on fantastic stuff from the beginning that we missed before we signed up, or because there was too much going on. This is fabulous, and I can relate to it so well, I practically could have written it. (Not that I would have thought to do so. And, if I had, I too, would have probably never gotten around to it! ;)

Thank you, glad you found it relatable, I suppose procrastination is an integral part of the process for a lot of writers :).
