The line seems jarring at first, the notion that a scientist and logical creature like Sherlock would subscribe to this idea. When humans naturally look for patterns, and correlation does not equate to causation; mathematically there must be coincidences. Then comes the realisation, this isn’t the ordinary world with ordinary people they’re speaking of. They’re talking about Mycroft’s world, where nothing is a coincidence, people are highly powerful players and everything happens because someone has machinated it to be so. (This is also somewhat true of Sherlock’s world, where dealing with murderers, every detail/action must be suspect).
First a list of apparent ‘coincidences’ during the episode:
· Sherlock and Mary both attempt to get to Magnussen through Janine and then end up breaking in on the same night
· Magnussen was going after Sherlock (to go after Mycroft) and Sherlock simultaneously got a case involving going after Magnussen
· Lady Smallwood was heading the Magnussen inquiry and hired Sherlock to deal with him and after Sherlock ends up shooting Magnussen she’s the one who has to give the go ahead for what happens to him
So, accepting the premise that none of the happenings in His Last Vow were by coincidence, whose machinations were they? There’s no way of knowing for sure but to get a clearer idea the motivations and machinations of each character need to be considered separately.

The first point of contention is that, as much as Elena has changed as a person (and then as a vampire) since the beginning of the series, I don’t think Elena’s moral compass has actually transformed much. It has always been people she cares about first, people of Mystic Falls (including herself) second and everyone else last. It’s just that before season one she hasn’t been in a situation where these distinctions are something she has to prioritise or that have such a drastic effect on lives. I do like the twisted nature of her moral compass but also how realistic it is as most people would put their loved ones above others. There’s also the important point of her being seventeen/eighteen and I think in a way having a different view of the world, she recognises the consequences on the wider world but doesn’t acknowledge them.

Klaus/Stefan: 4.01 – 4.09
There’s a lot of crazy supposition in this, possibly because the stuff that happens is more subtle, possibly because their relationship is moving into a different place and the show doesn’t want to make that explicitly obvious.
4.03
The episode that gave us vampires wearing helmets and the season’s first Klaus/Stefan scene. Klaus mentions to Tyler that he was on the way to Chigago, why? Possibly because it’s the home-land of Klefan and Klaus has a secret shrine he needs to update.
So, Elena is dying from having werewolf venom in her system and Stefan needs Klaus to heal her. This scene is clearly an inversion of the scene where Klaus and Stefan’s journey began in 2x22; Damon had a werewolf bite and Stefan needed Klaus to give him the cure. 3x21 ended that journey, ended that arc with Stefan desiccating Klaus, and this is them beginning again. This is them starting a new journey, from a different place.
I say inversion, not parallel, because even before Klaus enters the scene the contrast is obvious. In 2x22 Stefan goes to seek Klaus out fearing he might not return. Here Stefan phones Klaus, expecting the original to come to him, and willing to nag him until he does. Stefan knows if he calls Klaus will come, he believes this, he’s wondering ‘where the hell are you’, like there’s no question that Klaus would already be there if he was nearby. Even after ‘killing’ Klaus, he still believes Klaus will come, and he’s right because he knows that in a way he still has Klaus wrapped around his little finger. It’s not a big deal, which makes it vastly different from the scene in 2x22, when he was saying goodbye to Elena because he thought Klaus might kill him. Of course everyone’s more familiar with Klaus now, but that doesn’t change the fact that Stefan did just kill him, but he still has no fear.

Klaus/Stefan meta (Top Ten)
Sep. 30th, 2012 08:11 pmHere's a meta analysing my top ten Klefan scenes from the second half of season three, hope you enjoy my ramblings. I've wanted to write this for a while, so I'm glad it's finally out of my system. I ended up writing it as a part of a vd_land challenge.
