Snow filled child hearts with joy,

They did not know t’was a ploy,

The soft inviting surface did hide,

The dark depths which lay inside,

Unlike sweet whorls of flakes through air,

Snow blankets engulf like concealed snare,

Hallowed white a bone-dust veil,

Of turned ankles and darkened trail,

How could such that shines so hide such blackened ice?

A slip, a slide,

A lake to hide,

Fragile ice cracks at chinks,

A fragile body swiftly sinks,

Swirling down the snow’s sea does take,

The body as its own frozen flake.
