They wake up and they're the only two people on earth, so far as they can tell. The are only two vampires left- and there aren't any more humans.

Stefan says something about how Damon'll learn to appreciate his bambi diet now. Damon's reply is to say "bite me". Stefan doesn't want to admit that he's tempted.

The actual biting takes a while. It takes until they're arguing, fighting the way they do, and Stefan throws Damon up against a tree and Damon just- doesn't fight back. Maybe he's seen the look in Stefan's eye, the look that spells out desire more plainly than words. And Stefan bites his neck, soft, no fangs, until Damon says "just do it," like it's derisive, like he's bored, but he gasps when the teeth go in, gasps and sputters and grips Stefan's waist, head tilted back, eyes wide. And, when they kiss, Damon can taste his own blood in Stefan's mouth.

"This is our hell, you know that, don't you," Stefan says, later, much later, and it isn't a question.

"Yeah," Damon says, "yeah, I know. I read that stupid play. 'Hell is other people'. Whatever, Stefan. Sure, this is all just cosmic justice, your punishment for turning me. Congratulations, that makes so much sense."

"If you're so smart, you tell me what it is," Stefan says, challenging, but Damon doesn't rise to it, sticks to his line of argument because at least it works.

"If you're so sure we're living real life Jean-Paul Sartre," he says "where's our other person? The play has three. Where's Katherine, Stefan? If this is our hell, where's Katherine?"

Stefan laughs and says, "maybe that'd be too much like heaven." And this should be an argument, should be making them hate each other, and maybe it is, but that doesn't stop them from kissing, rolling in the grass where there's no-one left to see them, both thinking that it doesn't feel like they're in hell yet but that doesn't mean it never will.

Oh, this is just absolutely brilliant, I love it so much, I love how you made it about the whole 'Hell is other people' thing and they think they're in Hell except it doesn't feel like it yet. Yay for snarky Stefan mentioning that Damon will now appreciate the bunny diet and Damon saying bite me.
