This is Stefan Salvatore and Rebekah from the vampire diaries episode 3.03; the end of the affair. It’s one of my favourite vampire diaries episodes, especially the twenties flashbacks, which is where this beautiful icon harks from. I really love the bright lighting here, and the look on Stefan’s face is such a core Stefan look. Rebekah too is stunning here, and this icon seamlessly captures them fitting together well.

This is Rebekah’s introductory episode, and she is a well of sassy brilliance from the get go, excepting no nonsense from Stefan but still luring him in magnificently. In this scene we also see just how bad, bad Stefan got, which was as delicious as it was eerie. Stefan is like a chameleon, the many aspects of his personality shift through a spectrum, and he picks out what his current companion needs and brings it forth; this is just one of the reasons he is awesome.

This is Elena Gilbert from the vampire diaries, appetites promo. This is one of the only icons I’ve made that I’m genuinely happy with, and when I saw Elena sitting in this pose amidst Stefan and Damon with this background I knew I had to make an icon out of it. Elena is a wonderfully strong character, and what makes her such a great character is her deeply empathetic insight, which gives her a perspective of people and situations that others may easily miss. She understands people, and thus causes them to gravitate towards her and try to protect her; which has made her seem weak to some as other characters try to deny her agency in dangerous situations, but Elena always finds a way to assert her own will and triumph after all.


She cares for people deeply and differently depending on her insights of them, and will do anything to protect them. But as she has grown with the darkness around her she has become quite realistically ambivalent about strangers, not caring about the dangers Klaus or other villains pose to the population in general, merely trying to save those she loves; it brings a very real quality to her character.

This is Katherine Pierce, a.k.a. Katerina Petrova, from The vampire diaries, I’m not sure which episode, season two I assume. I really, really like the effect of the purple colouring in this icon, for me it gives the picture a quality of simultaneous simplicity and complexity; which really is Katherine in a nutshell. She’s a badass, who’s always out for herself, because she has always had to be, with a ruthless cunning that’s unparalleled in my opinion amongst the characters of this show. And yet, she also seems determined to profess her love for, and thus look out for Stefan, and more recently Damon. She’s a conniving manipulator, convincing all to do her bidding, and betraying them in turn when it suits her, but she does it all with style.

This is Daniel Jackson from stargate sg1 episode ‘need’, wherein Daniel becomes addicted to the healing effects of the sarcophagus. Here we have a very typical ‘concerned-Daniel’ look, in a very atypically concerning situation; Daniel who is perpetually worried for everyone, friend or foe alike, is here due to the sarcophagus’s effect worried for himself instead of his enslaved friends. Daniel has a beautifully all encompassing compassion and empathy, which when coupled with his genius and determination lead to him turning various lose-lose situations into win-win situations.


For example, in ‘Enemy Mine’ when they needed to get a metal by mining the sacred grounds of the Unas, leading to war almost breaking out but Daniel negotiates a deal which both parties are very happy with, which reminds me of Daniel’s first encounter of an Unas, he’s kidnapped and without the benefit of language manages to befriend the Unas and convince them to fight for his life. Then there’s scorched earth, where a peoples planet is being terra formed for another species, and Daniel convinces the robot-in-charge to find not only another suitable planet--but the home planet--of the settlers.    


This is the first icon I ever made, and more didn’t follow until years later. I was new to livejournal, and was still firmly in my lurker phase (as oppose to my semi-lurker semi-participant phase now), and needed an icon. But everywhere I looked was this mysterious phrase ‘no hotlinking’ and back then I didn’t know what it meant and in lurker mode was too shy to ask (and apparently it didn’t occur to me to google it). So I decided to make my own; I wanted something different from those around me, so I chose stargate which is a show I loved but a fandom I wasn’t in. Then I came upon this picture, went ‘ooh, floppy-haired Daniel’ and an icon was born. It remains as my default icon to this day (in part to make me easier to remember, but also because I like it).

This is Stefan and Klaus, also from vampire diaries episode 3.03. This icon captures Stefan and Klaus in the crux of their friendship, bright lighting mirroring the brightness of their relationship, it contrasts with the darkness in store decades later. There’s also the contrast of Klaus telling Stefan what to do as a friend here, where later he tells him what to do as a master. Klaus and Stefan is one of my favourite ships at the moment; whether they are friends, lovers, or enemies.


Klaus is such an awesome and tragic character, and Stefan is apparently a cure for his loneliness, they consider themselves to be as close as brothers but then he has to leave Stefan behind mainly for his own safety but probably a little for Stefan’s safety also. Then ninety years later, he finally finds Stefan again, except now his friend is with someone Klaus plans to kill and does so, despite this Klaus perseveres in his attempts to rekindle his friendship with Stefan, Stefan offers to do anything for the werewolf bite cure and Klaus uses this to try to get the Stefan of old back by forcing Stefan into being his ‘wingman’. Stefan obeys but refuses to go back to being the friend Klaus knew, and when he finds that Stefan betrayed him he compels his obedience. But once Stefan earns his freedom, Klaus undoes the compulsion, and still calls Stefan ‘friend’. Then Stefan steals Klaus’s family, and makes Klaus furious again. Their relationship is insane and EPIC.
