Ha, when I read that Gary's topic for this week was synesthesia, my mind first went to aliens as well. As it turns out though, I'm very glad I left this ground for you to cover.
Your main character reminds me of Larry Niven's Speaker To Animals--we were the animals. (grin)
I admire how you can pack so much detail into such a small space. The trip, the negotiation, the nebula. I always struggle with that, and usually ramble on for pages. :) All of the subplots were enjoyable, but I really liked the mystery and danger of the nebula.
